CAAT warns passengers of new power bank restrictions on Japan-bound flights

MONDAY, JULY 07, 2025

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has issued a notice alerting passengers to new regulations concerning the carriage of power banks on flights to Japan.

The updated rules, announced by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, will take effect on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

Key provisions of the new regulations include:

  • Passengers may carry and use power banks during the flight, but the devices must remain visible at all times—such as placed near the seat or in a bag under the seat.

  • Power banks must not be stored in overhead compartments.

  • Power banks are strictly prohibited in checked baggage.

  • Only power banks with a capacity of up to 160 Wh (watt-hours) are permitted on board. For those between 100 and 160 Wh, a maximum of two units may be carried, subject to the airline’s specific conditions.

The updated regulation is intended to reduce fire hazards associated with lithium batteries, which can overheat or ignite during flight.

CAAT urges all passengers travelling to Japan to check with their airline for any specific conditions or approval requirements, to ensure both safety and convenience.
